Biography Pamphlet of Saint Blaise

Saint Blaise – Bishop, Martyr, and Healer

Saint Blaise was a physician and bishop of Sebastea in historical Armenia (modern-day Turkey) during the 3rd and 4th centuries. Known for his compassion and miraculous healing abilities, he devoted his life to caring for the physical and spiritual needs of his people, especially the sick and poor.

During a period of severe persecution of Christians under Roman rule, Blaise fled to a cave in the wilderness where he lived in prayer and solitude, surrounded by wild animals whom he was said to have healed. Hunters eventually found him and arrested him for his faith. While imprisoned, Saint Blaise continued to work miracles, including saving a child who was choking on a fishbone — an event that led to his special association with the blessing of throats.

Saint Blaise suffered martyrdom around 316 AD, refusing to renounce his Christian faith. Today, he is honored as the patron saint of throat illnesses, physicians, veterinarians, and wool combers. His feast day is celebrated on February 3, and the Blessing of Throats remains a popular tradition in his honor.

Saint Blaise’s legacy is one of healing, protection, and unwavering faith, inspiring countless faithful to seek his intercession in times of physical and spiritual need.
